Depth Keys

Depth and space keys are used for key duplication by locksmiths and are not used to open locks like one of our bump key sets.

All of our depth keys have but cut on a computer controlled Intralock 9700A to ensure maximum accuracy. The great aspect of these code cutting machines is that they're extremely accurate and produce keys that within insane tolerances. The 9700A has a manufacturer specified repeatable accuracy less than the width of a human hair.  This machine loves to cut spot-on keys time and time again. We love it and you'll love these machines produce.

What do you use a depth & space key for?

Depth keys are used by locksmiths and other professionals to create new keys by code.  Our shop has a rather large need to own and operate a computer controlled code cutting machine; smaller shops, however, likely do not. That's where our depth keys comes in -  if a locksmith needs to create a new key and either doesn't have the original or the original is so worn that duplication would be difficult, a depth and space key set could be used to create a new key.

Let's use a Kwikset KW1 depth key set as an example:  The Kwikset has a depth of 1 - 7, and 5 spaces.  This means that there will be 7 keys in the set (1 key for each depth).  The first key will have 5 cuts all to the depth of "1".  The second key will have 5 cuts to the depth of "2", and on for all for all 7 depths possible.  Now when a locksmith needs to cut a new, original by code, key they'll decode the original key to find the code and then switch out the depth key as the source on their duplicator until the new key has been cut to the correct code.
