This viable solution works on nearly 90% of locks in North America (not just padlocks!) and is called a bump key because it essentially describes the method used. The method involves inserting a “skeleton” type key into the deadbolt, removing it one notch and “bumping” the key back in place. This causes the pins in the lock to drop into the grooves of the key enabling the key to be turned and the lock to open. For most people, this is a simple method to learn and an easy way to open all but the highest security locks.
